The Sphynx originated in 1966 in Toronto, Ontario, with a kitten named “Prune” who’s mother was a black and white domestic short hair. Although there have been reports of hairless cats throughout history, this was the start of the discovery and breeding of this beautiful and naturally occurring appearance. Two more hairless siblings were born in the early 1970s , named “Dermis and Epidermis”. Together with a few other found hairless kittens, they worked together to create the first attempt at the hairless breed.
Despite his bald body, a Sphynx requires at least as much grooming as cats with fur and maybe even more. Their skin must be kept moisturized with a gentle, scent-free lotion or oil, and they need baths so as not to leave greasy spots on your furniture and clothing. Use a gentle baby shampoo or moisturizing shampoo and rinse thoroughly, especially between the folds of the wrinkles. If you begin bathing your Sphynx kitten while he is young, he will learn to accept and sometimes even enjoy baths. Baby wipes will help to keep him clean between baths.
Special K Sphynx is a small home based sphynx cattery. We are lucky enough to reside in a beautiful country setting, approximately an hour from Halifax NS. Here we own approximately 11 acres of land on the Atlantic Ocean, and a century old farmhouse. Kristen has retired from the Royal Canadian Navy, and now devotes all her time to breeding healthy, happy sphynx, and bettering the breed.
